Merrill Goozner

MERRILL GOOZNER spent more than 25 years in the news business as a foreign correspondent, economics writer and investigative reporter for the Chicago Tribune and other publications. He reported from over a dozen countries while posted in Chicago, Tokyo, New York and Washington. His jobs included Chief Asia Correspondent (1991-95), New York Financial Correspondent (1996-1998) and Chief Economics Correspondent (1998-2000). Like Benjamin Franklin, he spent his early years in the business in the printing trade.

Arnold Schwartzenegger is Governor of California. He is a former movie actor and a former Mr. Universe (a body builder), which just goes to show you that America really is the land of second chances.

The good physiciain Joel Lexchin accurately diagnoses the disease, and his colleague Dr. Mansfield offers a prescription: public funding of research through centralized contracting. Others have offered a prize system for incentivizing research by the private sector.

Historically, the public sector has often accomplished all phases of drug development for therapeutics considered important to society, whether it be penicilin in wartime or AIDS drugs during that pandemic. As long as we understand the skills of drug development are not the monopoly property of the private sector, then designing a system that best uses those social resources is not a question of "how" but of political will.

Sadly, that is lacking, at least here in the U.S.
