Forget the cabinet shuffle. This story is far more important.
Stephen Harper is actually saying that he believes in an "autonomous" Québec. This is the sort of word that peoples tend to use as they struggle for independence. As just one example, I am reading Jimmy Carter’s memoirs and the concept of "autonomy" for Palestinians was key to the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in the 1970s.
What happens if the rest of the world takes "autonomous" to mean the same thing in Canada that it means in the United Nations ? Do we really want to tell the word that Québec is an "autonomous nation in Canada" ? At what point does all this political maneuvering actually end the reality of Québec as a Canadian province that has to negotiate with the federal government other provinces for what it wants outside of its constitutional jurisdiction ?
Forget the rearranging of the Titanic’s deck chairs. I’m far more concerned about the iceberg into which Stephen Harper wants to steer us.
