While controversy surrounds this week’s renewed negotiations for a Middle East peace, and pessimistic predictions dominate international headlines, a group of volunteers in Tel Aviv and the Palestinian West Bank have stepped up their own actions to build popular support for the resolution of the conflict.
The Association for Peace in the Middle East (APUME) has the mission to enhance communication and create mutual understanding among all peoples in the Middle East so that they can resolve the current Palestinian/Israeli conflict and attain peace.
With peace negotiations resuming for the first time in seven years, the group believes that because the issues that divide both sides are complex and deep-rooted, the resolution depends not only on the politicians, but on men and women who work to establish communication and resolve problems on a grassroots level.
"For months we have been distributing photographs that document that affection, humanity and help are inherent in man and are stronger than destruction," said the group’s director. "These pictures show the real nature of man."
The group is now expanding its actions with the launch of "The Person of Good Will Project." They will be sending out thousands of certificates to people who are actively working to bridge the gap between Israelis and Palestinians.
Through these certificates, and letting people know their work is appreciated, the group aims to building a strong popular base of support for a full resolution of the conflict by the end of 2008.
The Association for Peace in the Middle East is a chapter of The Way To Happiness Foundation a Los Angeles-based non-profit public benefit corporation. The Way to Happiness is a wholly secular and non-religious, common-sense moral code written by L. Ron Hubbard. Over the past several years volunteers have distributed some 3 million copies of The Way To Happiness in Hebrew and Arabic throughout the region.
